Most Christians talk too much, I mean negatively, and they do this because they don’t understand that in their tongue lies the power to kill and to make alive, so I encourage you to stick and watch this video to the end because it might be the Holy Spirit trying to connect you so you can know how to save a life or your own life using the tongue.
Every single day, thousands of words pass through our lips. We speak in our homes, at our workplaces, in our churches, and across our digital platforms. Yet, very few people stop to evaluate the spiritual weight and long-term consequences of the words they release into the atmosphere. For many, speaking is merely a continuous, unthinking reaction to circumstances, feelings, and immediate frustrations.
When negative situations, financial hardship, or sickness arise, the natural human reaction is to complain, declare defeat, and speak words of doubt. Many believers repeatedly declare over their own lives that things are getting worse, that they will never succeed, or that their sickness is unto death. They fail to realize that by engaging in negative speech, they are actively constructing the very failure and destruction they claim to fear.
The spiritual realm responds to spoken authority. Words are not empty sounds that vanish into nothingness; they are spiritual forces that carry legal authority in the invisible realm. When you align your speech with fear, anger, and bitterness, you grant the enemy legal ground to enforce those negative declarations in your physical reality.
To walk in divine victory and experience the fullness of God’s blessings, you must gain total control over your mouth. Transforming your life begins with transforming your speech. By surrendering your tongue to the Holy Spirit and learning to speak in alignment with divine truth, you transform your words from tools of self-destruction into channels of life, healing, and supernatural breakthrough.
What is the Meaning of Proverbs 18:21?
The meaning of Proverbs 18:21 is that human speech possesses God-given spiritual authority to either create life or produce destruction, and every individual will inevitably harvest and eat the direct fruits of the words they choose to utter. The tongue as we know is the organ for speaking. Every words and utterances comes from the tongue, and as the scripture reveals to us the meaning, the power of life and death lies within the tongue which means that God has given us the power of the spoken word to either make anything alive or death.
Solomon emphasizes that those who love the tongue shall eat the fruit thereof. This means that your current reality—your spiritual health, emotional peace, relationships, and progress—is largely a reflection of the continuous declarations you have been making over time. If you speak words of death, fear, and defeat, you will reap a harvest of decay; if you speak life, faith, and God’s promises, you will reap a harvest of righteousness and divine preservation.
God designed human beings in His own image, bestowing upon us the capacity to shape our environment through faith-filled speech. When you use your tongue to declare God’s Word over dead situations, you release divine energy to bring transformation. Conversely, careless, malicious, or faithless speech acts as a destructive poison that decays your spiritual authority and brings ruin to your personal world.

The Divinity of the Word: From Genesis Creation to Jesus Christ
To understand the supernatural authority embedded in spoken words, we must examine the nature of the Word of God from the very beginning. Supporting scripture John 1:1-3 reveals that in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God; all things were made by Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made.
The scripture here reveals that the word is the same thing God used to create everything, now the most outstanding thing in that passage is the personification of the term word, which literally shows the word as a human being, then when you read down to Verse 14-15 you discover this word is Jesus Christ. This goes to show that it was Jesus that God used to create everything. So when he said “let there be…” in the Creation story of Genesis 1, Jesus will spring into action and create what God had commanded.
This profound connection shows that words are the primary vehicle through which divine power is released into physical reality. Creation itself was brought forth through spoken decree. When God spoke, the Living Word executed the Father’s divine will, bringing order out of chaos and light out of darkness.
Because you are created in the image of God and redeemed by the blood of Christ, your words carry a delegated creative capacity. When your spoken words align with Jesus—the Living Word—you operate in divine synergy, commanding light, order, and life into chaotic situations in your daily walk.
Fleshly Words vs. Life-Giving Words: Understanding John 6:63
Having understood Jesus as the word in physical reality, let’s read John 6:63 to see his own reference to the word. Here he Jesus reveals to us that the words He spoke to us which are recorded in the Bible are what gives life, and the fleshly words profits nothing. Jesus explicitly states, “It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.”
This then goes to say that if you want your tongue to bring forth life, you must apply the words of Jesus both in prayer and in your everyday life as it relates to your present or current situation. When you speak purely out of human emotion, fear, panic, or worldly philosophy, your words belong to the realm of the flesh, which produces zero spiritual life and only leads to destruction.
Now one thing you would understand when you go deeper into Biblical texts is that each and everyone of them are applicable to every life situations, and being vested with them will help you to apply them when you find yourself in such situations and gain the positive result you need. On the other hand, if you do not know the words of Jesus you will always be uttering fleshly and destructive words to your own damnation.
Filling your mind with Scripture prepares your tongue to speak life when trials come. When sickness attacks, instead of speaking death, you declare, “By His stripes I am healed.” When financial lack threatens, instead of speaking poverty, you declare, “My God shall supply all my need according to His riches in glory.” Speaking the written Word releases the Spirit of God to quicken your circumstances.
Escaping Spiritual Traps and Temptation Through Scriptural Knowledge
Mastering your speech and thoughts through the Word of God serves as a divine shield against hidden traps, destructive temptations, and physical death. When you know and apply the specific teachings of Jesus, you gain the spiritual wisdom required to navigate complex moral choices and escape deadly snares.
Application: Example, when you know what Jesus said in Matthew 5:27-30 that looking at a woman with lustful intentions is adultery, you will avoid the trap of looking at a beautiful woman twice and in so doing escape the temptation to approach her for a relationship which might push you into having sexual related or transmitted disease or even being killed by the husband of that woman. So you now see how the power of death and life lies in your tongue.
Knowing the Word of God prevents you from speaking or acting foolishly in moments of temptation. A person who lacks scriptural understanding will speak flirtatious, foolish words that invite disaster, immoral relationships, and physical destruction. But a person whose tongue and mind are conditioned by Scripture speaks truth, sets godly boundaries, and avoids deadly traps altogether.
Your tongue reflects the abundance of your heart. When you saturate your heart with Christ’s teachings, your speech automatically aligns with divine wisdom. You stop uttering destructive, fleshly words that lead to damnation, and instead speak words of wisdom, purity, and life that preserve your soul, protect your body, and glorify God.
How Do You Apply Proverbs 18:21 to Your Daily Life?
To apply Proverbs 18:21 to your life, you must make a deliberate, daily commitment to discipline your speech, eliminate negative declarations, and consistently speak the Word of God over every area of your life.
Here are practical steps to tame your tongue and activate the power of life daily:
- Repent of Negative and Careless Words: Ask the Holy Spirit to forgive you for past declarations of doubt, fear, self-cursing, and anger. Explicitly renounce every negative word you have spoken over your health, career, children, and marriage.
- Saturate Your Mind Daily with Scripture: Study the teachings of Jesus and memorize scriptures relevant to your health, protection, and daily needs. You cannot speak life if your heart is empty of the Word of life.
- Filter Your Utterances Before Speaking: Before making declarations about a difficult situation, pause and ask whether your words align with John 6:63. Refuse to speak out of fear, frustration, or worldly anxiety.
- Declare Faith-Filled Words Over Your Circumstances: Daily open your mouth and declare God’s promises over your home, career, spiritual walk, and body. Use your tongue as an instrument of prophecy to speak divine life into every dead area.
By implementing these scriptural steps, you break the cycle of self-inflicted defeat and step into the power of spoken faith. Your tongue will no longer bring death, but will serve as a powerful tool to preserve your life, build up others, and usher in the peace and righteousness of God.
