The laws and practices God gave to us Christians are free but we take them for granted whereas those who dabble in the occult spend so much on their acts and books and that’s why they take it serious. In today’s reflection, we are going to discover how we neglect things freely given to us by God.
In our world today, millions of people invest massive financial fortunes, time, and emotional energy into worldly systems, superstitious practices, and secret rituals to secure power, protection, and success. People willingly pay huge sums to herbalists, occult practitioners, and false seers because human nature often falsely measures value by financial cost. When something comes at a heavy price tag, people handle it with intense dedication and reverence, mistakenly assuming that expensive means effective.
Tragically, many believers treat the unsearchable riches of Jesus Christ with casual indifference simply because divine grace and salvation are offered freely. Because we did not have to pay cash for the Holy Spirit, the Name of Jesus, or the scriptures, we frequently neglect our spiritual inheritance, neglect daily prayer, and leave the word of God unread on our shelves. We underestimate the supreme spiritual authority available to us through simple faith in Christ.
This spiritual blindness causes many Christians to live in constant fear and defeat, running after counterfeit sources of power when the absolute authority over every force of darkness has already been handed to them without money and without price. Relying on human rituals or paid spiritual shortcuts ignores the complete victory that Jesus Christ secured for us through His death and resurrection.
Understanding the infinite superiority of God’s free grace frees you from spiritual exploitation and fear. When you realize the immense value of what Christ has freely deposited inside you, you stop looking to worldly or occult means and begin operating in genuine spiritual power.
What is the Meaning of Acts 19:19?
The meaning of Acts 19:19 is a dramatic demonstration of genuine repentance, where new believers in Ephesus publicly burned their costly occult manuals and magic books, proving that the real power of God in Jesus Christ completely exposes and supersedes all demonic counterfeits. From this passage we discover how those who dabbled in the occult, that is magicians, gave up their acts and books worth fifty thousand pieces of silver to turn to God and when you study the passage in its context you’ll discover that they did this when they saw Paul casting out demons and when the seven sons of Sceva tried to do so they were attacked and stripped them naked.
During the Apostle Paul’s ministry in Ephesus, God performed extraordinary miracles through his hands, so much so that even handkerchiefs touched by Paul healed the sick and drove out evil spirits. When the seven sons of Sceva—unbelieving Jewish exorcists—attempted to use the name of Jesus as a magical formula without having a personal relationship with Him, the demonic spirit openly declared, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?” and violently overpowered them. This shocking event filled the city with holy fear and magnified the supreme authority of the name of the Lord Jesus.
From here we discover that these magicians gave up their acts and books because they discovered they were useless and not working and they had spent their money for nothing. The combined value of fifty thousand pieces of silver represented an astronomical fortune—roughly equivalent to fifty thousand days of labor—yet these converts did not sell or pass along their magical texts. They completely destroyed them in a public bonfire to make a permanent break with darkness, proving that no earthly wealth can compare to the true power and righteousness found in Christ.

The Free Gift of Authority: Mark 16:17-18
While practitioners of magic pay exorbitant prices for temporary, deceptive spells, God bestows genuine spiritual power upon every true believer without cost. Supporting scripture Mark 16:17-18 promises: “And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.” But as we’re going to see from our supporting scripture, God has given us His word and power to perform signs and wonders for free, especially to cast out demons as Paul did.
Spiritual authority over sickness, demonic oppressions, and poisonous attacks is not reserved for an elite class of spiritual practitioners who charge money for their services. Jesus clearly stated that these miraculous signs follow *them that believe*. Your qualifications for exercising divine power do not come from buying special items, candles, oil, or secret books, but from placing unshakeable faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ.
The authority to use the name of Jesus is a royal power of attorney granted freely to the body of Christ. When you stand firmly on the word of God and speak in the name of Jesus, every demonic power must bow, because the authority behind that name is the sovereign power of Almighty God Himself.
Understanding that divine authority is a free gift guards your heart against spiritual deception. You do not need to perform ritualistic tasks or buy protection; you simply need to activate your faith and exercise the authority already given to you in Christ.
Recognizing Counterfeits and Avoiding Spiritual Exploitation
But it’s so unfortunate to discover that most Christians continue to visit prophets and seers who charge them heavily for the very acts/books they use to perform spells and rituals which they now call assignment. As we saw in our supporting passage, all you need to do is to believe in Jesus in order to be able to perform signs and wonders, but since you can’t do so you’re running to those who’ll deceive you by using the very acts and books the magicians we saw in our main passage gave up today.
Many modern false prophets operate using the exact same principles as ancient Ephesian magicians, repackaging divination, rituals, and consultation fees under Christian terminology. They exploit people’s desperation, fear, and spiritual ignorance by demanding money for “special prayers,” selling physical items for spiritual protection, or assigning ritualistic tasks to achieve breakthroughs. This is a direct perversion of the true gospel of Jesus Christ.
In Matthew 10:8, Jesus specifically said that the power to perform signs & wonders are given to us for free and we should also make use or use it on people for free, and so you should start wondering why the so-called prophets are charging you for assignments. Christ explicitly instructed His disciples, “Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.” Any spiritual ministry that commercializes the power of God or charges fees for divine miracles operates outside the biblical standard established by Christ.
Running to fraudulent spiritualists for answers shows a lack of trust in the sufficiency of Jesus Christ. If the Ephesian magicians burned their expensive books because they realized they were worthless in the light of Christ, believers must not turn back to those same spiritual counterfeits today.
Exercising Your Divine Authority: Applying Mark 16:17-18
Application: All you need to do is to believe in the Lord Jesus to receive the power. God does not demand money, ritualistic sacrifices, or complex assignments for you to walk in His divine power and protection.
Here are practical steps to burn away spiritual counterfeits and step into true biblical authority today:
- Destroy Every Occult and Superstitious Tie: Follow the example of the Ephesian believers by removing and destroying any superstitious charms, ritual items, or occult literature from your home. Make a complete break with darkness.
- Stop Paying for Spiritual Assignments: Refuse to patronize false prophets or seers who demand financial payment, consultation fees, or ritualistic tasks for prayers and deliverance. Trust completely in the free grace of God.
- Anchor Yourself in Daily Scripture and Prayer: Value the free gifts God has given you by dedicating time each day to reading the Bible and praying in the Holy Spirit. Build your personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
- Boldly Exercise the Name of Jesus: When facing sickness, fear, or spiritual opposition, do not run around looking for a human mediator. Stand on Mark 16:17-18, speak the word of God, and exercise your authority in the name of Jesus to command peace and deliverance.
When you place your full trust in the finished work of Christ and value the free power of the Holy Spirit, no demonic force or deceptive scheme can keep you in bondage!
